CHENNAI, India – If you show up drunk to a chess tournament, you’re apparently good for only about 11 moves, even though you may otherwise be a good player. The Hindustan Times newspaper reported French Grandmaster Vladislav Tkachiev was so intoxicated he had difficulty sitting in his chair, and soon passed out with his head on the table while competing at an international tournament in India.
Newspapers printed pictures of Tkachiev as he soundly dozed, even as organizers failed to awaken him.
The match was awarded to India’s Praveen Kumar as Tkachiev was unable to complete the moves in the hour and half time limit.
The drunken Tkachiev was warned, presumably after becoming alert and oriented, yet was allowed to participate in the remainder of the competition.
