MEXICO CITY — The fact that 12,937 people donning black fedoras, white gloves, and aviator sunglasses danced all at the same time to the late Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” on what would have been his 51st birthday tops my “weird” for today.
And even more bizarre, there is already a Guinness record (albeit only 242 wannabes participated) set in May of 2009 by a group of 242 students from College of William & Mary who performed the routine in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Guinness Book of World Records will decide in the next week if the old record was indeed broken. Guinness must certify whether all those people really performed the entire, intricate routine. There is no indication that Guinness will actually be judging individual performances, just whether they kept moving.
Some of those who danced the part were born more than two decades after “Thriller” was originally released.
